American Open University Enters Nigeria: A New Era for Higher Education
The future of learning in Nigeria is entering a new phase with the launch of American Open University, joining the growing number of public and private online tertiary institutions across the country.
Founded on innovation, accessibility, and global best practices, the university seeks to transform access to higher education in Nigeria by removing traditional barriers of distance, time, and limited opportunity.
Education stakeholders agree that achieving inclusive and equitable quality education in the 21st century requires embracing Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL), in alignment
with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4), which promotes quality education for all.
Speaking at the second international colloquium organised by the Distance Learning Institute (DLI) of University of Lagos, Som Naidu of University of Melbourne emphasised the need to rethink how higher institutions design and deliver learning through the integration of technology. According to him, “For a future-focused education, a rethink and recalibration of educational as well as institutional choreographies is required.”
In a rapidly evolving digital world, where technology shapes nearly every aspect of life, Nigeria must adapt its educational systems to remain relevant. Higher institutions are called upon to reimagine the learning experience and equip students with the competencies required to thrive in the 21st century.
Hybrid instruction, also known as blended learning, merges the strengths of face-to-face engagement with the flexibility and accessibility of online platforms. This model provides both interpersonal interaction and digital convenience, offering learners a balanced and effective educational experience.
Such flexible learning pathways are particularly beneficial for working professionals and other Nigerians seeking to advance their education without disrupting their careers or personal responsibilities. In this regard, the addition of American Open University to Nigeria’s distance and online learning landscape represents a significant and timely development.
Reflecting on the institution’s journey to Nigeria, its President and Founder, David Akanbi, stated: “Visions don’t die. Even when the visionaries pass on, the dream continues. Fortunately, today, the dream has come true, and the team that championed it is here to celebrate it.”
With over 76 million Nigerian youths in need of higher education opportunities, innovative models such as this are essential.
The traditional campus-based university system alone cannot meet the growing demand, as it currently accommodates only a small percentage of eligible students. Expanding open and distance learning options therefore offers a practical and sustainable solution to bridging Nigeria’s higher education gap.
