NIMC Warns Against Illegal Charges as NIN Enrollment Remains Free for Students
In a bid to regulate security, maintain orderliness, and ensure a smooth examination process, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has insisted that candidates sitting for the 2026 Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations must be registered with NIMC. As a form of warning to both parents and guardians, the Commission noted that this requirement is mandatory for the examination exercise.
This new development was disclosed on the Commission’s official X platform, where it described the National Identification Number (NIN) as a “critical academic tool.” It stated that the NIN is now a core requirement for scholarship applications, school registrations, as well as other government-linked benefits.
In its statement, the Commission urged Nigerian parents to take advantage of the ongoing issuance of NIN to their children and wards. It emphasized the importance of the NIN, stating:
“Dear Nigerian parent, your child needs an NIN. NIN is now important for school registrations, exams, scholarships, and many other government benefits.”
However, the Commission also pointed out that the issuance of NIN forms part of its broader effort toward proper identification of all Nigerian children. The sole aim, it noted, is to ensure accurate and organized identification across the country.
As part of its consideration for people living in rural areas with little or no access to NIN centres, the Commission stated that plans are already in place to reach rural residents. To curtail the challenge of distance, mobile registration points will be deployed to communities and villages to enable school children to be captured without stress.
As a safety measure, the Commission advised both parents and guardians to accompany their children or wards for the capturing process to ensure safety and orderliness. It emphasized that children must be duly supervised by a parent or guardian who possesses a valid NIN, as this will be required for the issuance of NIN to their children or wards.
In the same statement, the Commission warned the general public to be watchful for any illegalities during the exercise. It reiterated that NIN enrollment is absolutely free of charge and that no payment should be made to anyone for the process.
Meanwhile, the Commission also noted that provisions have been made for those who do not know the locations of NIN centres. To find the closest NIN centre, individuals are advised to visit the official website or use their mobile phones to locate the nearest registration centre.
However, as part of the NIN registration requirements, children are expected to come with their birth certificate or age declaration, and their parent or guardian must possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN).
