Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike Appoints First Female Vice-Chancellor


Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa has been appointed as the first female Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), marking a historic milestone for the institution.

Her appointment was announced by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Fidelis Edeh, following the Council’s 95th meeting and the consideration of the Selection Panel’s report. She emerged successful in a competitive process involving 22 professors.

A Professor of Educational Measurement and Evaluation, Akanwa joined MOUAU in 2011 as an Associate Professor from Abia State University and became a full professor in 2014. She currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development).

She will assume office on March 1, 2026, succeeding Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, whose tenure ends February 28, 2026.
Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, an indigene of Imo State born in Gusau, had her early education in Owerri before earning her degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1980–1984).

She has published over 73 journal articles and eight textbooks, and serves on the Abia State Investigative Panel on Recovery of Looted Funds set up by Alex Otti. She is also the Women’s Leader of Streams of Joy International, Umuahia, and is married with children.
