ASUU Suspends Four-Month Strike at Ondo Varsity

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, has called off its four-month-old strike.

The union had embarked on an indefinite industrial action in August over the non-payment of salaries and accumulated arrears by the administration of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Confirming the suspension in an interview with The Nation, Chairman of the AAUA ASUU chapter, Comrade Bolawaji Oshodi, said the union resolved to return to the classrooms after reaching a mutual understanding with the university management.

“For now, we have suspended the strike. Everything is based on the agreement we reached with the university management. The management has been very supportive, and we understand the situation.

“We are still owed one month’s salary, but because of our commitment to the system and our students, we decided to suspend the strike,” Oshodi stated.

ASUU AAUA had earlier issued a letter signed by Oshodi and the chapter’s Secretary, Olusegun Taiwo, formally notifying the university of their withdrawal from academic activities due to unpaid salaries and arrears.

The letter referenced the union’s resolution at its August 21, 2025 congress, directing members to cease academic duties until all outstanding payments were made.

Oshodi explained that the union had repeatedly written to both the university management and the state government over the prolonged non-payment but received no substantive response.

He added that chronic underfunding remained the institution’s biggest challenge.

“To be sincere, the major problem we are facing is funding. The state government is not funding the university. As I speak, we are being owed two months’ salaries—July and August—aside from various arrears, promotion arrears, excess workload allowances, and other entitlements running into billions.

“The state government is not forthcoming. So, we resolved that until these issues are addressed, we would not go back,” he said.
