Apply For Umthombo Youth Development Foundation Programme, 2026
The Umthombo Youth Development Foundation (UYDF) Bursary Programme for 2026 offers a life-changing opportunity for dedicated young people from rural KwaZulu-Natal who dream of building a career in the health sciences. Designed to support talented students from under-resourced communities, the bursary provides financial assistance, mentoring, practical hospital exposure, and personal development training. By helping rural youth access university education and return to serve their communities, UYDF continues to strengthen healthcare delivery in some of South Africa’s most underserved areas.
What is UYDF and what the 2026 bursary is for
UYDF is a non-profit organisation in South Africa aiming to support rural youth in pursuing health-science education and eventually serving in underserved rural areas.
Umthombo Youth Development Foundation
The 2026 bursary programme is designed to help students from certain rural districts in KwaZulu-Natal by providing top-up funding, mentorship, life-skills training, and practical hospital exposure — on top of standard student aid from National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
Who Is Eligible (Eligibility Criteria)
To apply for the 2026 UYDF bursary, you must meet all the following conditions:
Be from one of these districts or listed hospital catchment areas in KwaZulu-Natal:
Mkhanyakude District: Bethesda, Hlabisa, Manguzi, Mosvold, Mseleni
Zululand District: Benedictine, Ceza, Itshelejuba, Nkonjeni, Vryheid
King Cetshwayo District: Catherine Booth, Ekombe, KwaMagwaza, Mbongolwane, Nkandla
Must currently be in Matric (Grade 12) or have completed Matric — from a Quintile 1–3 rural non-fee-paying school.
Must be accepted (or intending to accept) admission to a public university in South Africa (contact/attendance-based — not distance-learning via UNISA) to study one of the supported health-science degrees.
Must be entering the 1st or 2nd year of study in 2026, and studying towards your first degree.
Must have or obtain NSFAS funding (or NSFAS approval for 2026), because UYDF acts as a “top-up” bursary on top of NSFAS.
Must be willing to work for at least 2 years at one of the specified rural hospitals after graduation.
